This month, meet Dr. Bimpe Ayeni. A bit of a deviation from our traditional GWOM feature but she is well worth featuring! A plastic surgeon specializing in breast reconstruction, we thought it an interesting perspective to share considering the time we spend with our plastic surgeons and the amount of trust and faith we place in them. One of her patients (that chose to remain flat) writes, “She is an excellent listener. Dr. Ayeni left me feeling empowered to make the choices that were right for me. The time I spent with her felt like time spent with a trusted friend.”
Dr. Ayeni was trained and educated at McMaster University and Harvard and currently runs her practice out of Southlake Regional Health Centre. She was drawn to breast reconstruction because of the potential to improve women’s quality of life and restore their self-image. “Nobody anticipates a cancer diagnosis. I am always impressed by the courage and resilience of my patients. Their tenacity and patience are impressive.”
Dr. Ayeni organizes a BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) Day event at Southlake in October to allow local women at various stages of their breast cancer diagnosis to come together and meet with health professionals on a more intimate level. They are able to meet industry representatives, gain important knowledge on various surgical procedures and see first hand the results of these various surgical options in a private setting with women who have completed their breast reconstruction.
What makes Dr. Ayeni feel gorgeous? “I feel proud when I see patients who were initially shy to get undressed, smile with confidence when they look in the mirror; they stand taller as they embrace their new appearance.”
