My name is Lisa Lurie. I am a student of the cancer school of hard knocks. The entry exam started with a cancer diagnosis and thankfully I graduated - a survivor. In my case, my experience inspired me to become a patient advocate, author, speaker and the co-founder of Cancer Be Glammed. A company that educates and empowers women facing all forms of cancer to recover with dignity, positive self-esteem and personal style.
In the Spring of 2008, I was diagnosed with invasive ductal breast cancer. I underwent a double mastectomy without reconstruction, an oophorectomy and chemotherapy. In a very short period of time, I became bald, breast-less, and bloated from steroids. It was soul-destroying.
Not just for me, but for my husband and two young daughters as well.
I soon found that while I was receiving excellent medical care, I had very little support to help me cope with the day-to-day impact of cancer surgery and treatment. This included dealing with personal challenges like scars, disfigurement, hair loss, weight gain, and skin issues. On the family front, I struggled to keep our active, happy and often hectic lifestyle intact.
When I recovered, I became determined to help other women coping with cancer have an informed and empowered, “take charge” recovery. I co-founded Cancer Be Glammed and launched CancerBeGlammed.com. CBG’s website provides women and their families with easy access to relevant lifestyle solutions and recovery products, supportive resources, thoughtful gifts, and a dynamic community of survivors sharing their hard-won wisdom and advice.
From a spark of an idea ten years ago, Cancer Be Glammed has grown and it continues to evolve. We now offer CBG-TV and we recently published our unique guidebook, Cancer Be Glammed—The Guide. “Take Charge of Your Recovery with Confidence, Self-Esteem & Style.
A reporter once asked me where I saw myself in 5 years. I said. “My fondest wish is that I will be out of business. That the elusive cancer cure(s) would be found.’ Until that happens, each morning I fill my coffee cup, flip open my computer and get back to work!
