Sexy Survivors Take the Stage

Friday February 9th marked the first official day of the 23rd Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang South Korea.  While many were glued to their screens or setting their PVRs to see Figure Skating, Snowboarding or Hockey, I was waiting in anticipation for another event featuring a different group of fierce and courageous warriors.  Just like Olympians these women had to overcome many obstacles and find the inner strength to have their moment in the spotlight and show the world what grace and determination looks like.  Yesterday over 20 breast cancer survivors from Canada and the United States took the stage to model lingerie at New York Fashion Week.  These gorgeous women boldly strutted their stuff whether that “stuff” had been subject to radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, surgical scarring, reconstruction or all of the above. The event was held in partnership with #Cancerland, a not-for-profit for those living with metastatic breast cancer.

Who were these beautiful and empowering women?  They were athletes, musicians, educators, and activists ranging in age from early 20’s to late 50’s - all demonstrating that while the reach of breast cancer has no limits, neither do they.

Nicknamed “The Dangerous Ones”, these women proudly showcased their beauty featuring designs by Ana Ono, a leading lingerie and loungewear line created for breast cancer survivors, by a breast cancer survivor (and dear friend and manufacturer for Gorgeous You) named Dana Donofree.

In Dana’s words: "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to show that these inspiring individuals walking our runway are no different than any other person walking New York Fashion Week, or sitting in the audience or even riding the subway or walking into your neighborhood coffee shop. We want to show that whether you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have a genetic marker, have breasts or have none, have visible scarring or even tattoos in place of nipples, it doesn't matter. You are still empowered, strong and sexy!" *

As I watched the show live I was moved, inspired and proud to be part of such a community of women.  I too am a Dangerous One and these women reminded me of that.
